Depression Isn’t Always Crying Every Day.

Sometimes it’s numb, flat, exhausted, or like you’re moving through life in low-battery mode. If you’re functioning but you’re not living, that could be indicative of depression. You might be surprised to learn that depression doesn’t always look dramatic. A lot of the time, it shows up as numbness, withdrawal, and doing the bare minimum...and that takes everything you’ve got. You might be getting through work and parenting and errands, but it might feel like you’re moving through sludge. You may have less motivation, less pleasure, less patience, and less of you. Sometimes it’s sadness. Sometimes it’s irritability. Sometimes it’s nothing at all, which can be the scariest part.

Depression Shows Up in a Few Different Ways

Depression Might Look Like

  • Low mood, emptiness, or numbness

  • Fatigue, brain fog, low motivation

  • Shame/self-criticism (“what is wrong with me?”)

  • Shutdown or withdrawing from people

  • Depression mixed with anxiety or chronic stress

  • Symptoms related to trauma

How We Work With Depression

We use evidence-based interventions that may include the following techniques.

  • psychoeducation

  • Somatic & nervous-system interventions

  • Using pattern & behavior work (small, realistic shifts that rebuild momentum)

  • Developing meaning & identity support when depression shows up as “I don’t know who I am anymore.”

  • Understand how thoughts, behaviors, and feelings interact with each other

  • Community and medical referrals for modalities such as TMS, as needed/clinically appropriate

Who's This For?

Somatic-informed trauma therapy is beneficial for many types of experiences. We don’t treat depression like a character flaw or a mindset problem. We look at what’s keeping you stuck: stress load, nervous system shutdown, self-criticism, grief, isolation, depleted routines, unresolved hurt. then we work to build skills in a way that makes sense for your needs.

Stephanie Dasher, LPC-A (South Carolina) — under the supervision of Dr. Maia Gill, PhD (SC#1202).

FAQ's

01.

Do I need a diagnosis?

No. You don’t need a formal diagnosis to start therapy. If you believe you have depression, a counselor can perform an assessment to determine a diagnosis. If a diagnosis becomes clinically relevant (for treatment planning, documentation, or insurance/superbills), we can talk through it.

02.

Can I do virtual sessions anywhere in South Carolina?

Yes. If you’re located in South Carolina, we can meet via secure telehealth from anywhere in the state. If you’re traveling outside SC, we may need to pause until you’re back in-state (licensing rules depend on where you physically are during the session).

03.

What if it’s grief, not depression?

We’ll sort that out together during the intake assessment. Grief and depression can overlap, but the work looks different. For those suffering from grief, referral to a grief counselor may be appropriate.

04.

What if I’m depressed and anxious?

This is more common than you might think. We’ll treat you as a whole person, not just one label.
